The busy sea

On February 3, 2024, editor Ronald Meyer-Arlt published an article about the book RANDMEER by Olaf Kanter in the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung (HAZ). He discusses the use of the North Sea, both today and in the past. He also writes: “Kanter describes the North Sea as a sea that is constantly changing. Dramatic events – such as the flood of 1362, which went down in history as the ‘Grote Mandränke’ – have shaped the North Sea.”

Olaf Kanter is a journalist and sailor. He first studied English in Hamburg, Galway and Cologne and later geosciences at the Open University in Milton Keynes. After working for the daily newspaper “WELT” and the marine magazine “mare”, he joined SPIEGEL ONLINE’s politics department in 2008. He has been head of the SPIEGEL news website since 2017. He has been sailing since his school days; in 2016 he circumnavigated the Baltic Sea in his small coastal cruiser.
