THE FUTURE OF THE BEACH – Public event with discussion
What is the future of the beach? What issues will we face when sea levels inevitably rise? And what about development on the coasts?
In their book STRAND, marine biologist Prof. Dr. Karsten Reise and ZEITwissen editor Hella Kemper have dealt with the beach as a cultural and meeting place and as a habitat for numerous animals and plants that is worth protecting. Together with Sebastian Rischen from the St. Peter-Ording Tourism Center, Rainer Schulz from the Wadden Sea Protection Station and Armin Jeß from the State Office for Coastal Protection, National Park and Marine Conservation, the authors talk about the importance of the beach as a habitat – and about its future. Is the beach in St. Peter-Ording and on the North Sea coast threatened by climate change?
The beach experts discuss opportunities and conflicts around nature conservation, development and tourism. They take aim at the changes to the beach and discuss how to make the natural space worth protecting more visible to visitors.
The event is open to the public. If you want to be sure of getting a seat, please register at: jraedecke@jarchow-media.de.
